The megacity Rises to Hazardous Smog Following Diwali

Tuesday brought citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to severely hazardous air that registered in the "alarming" level.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Various sections of Delhi recorded an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals 10x the healthy limit set by the global health authority.

Particular areas, concentrations of toxic particulate matter soared to of 1,800, equating to 15-20x higher than safe limits.

Firecracker Restrictions and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, authorities had implemented a complete ban on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the hazardous pollution that covers the metropolis as the cold season approaches.

Yet recently, the newly elected local leadership petitioned the supreme court to seek a easing of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and public health".

Court Verdict and Implementation

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental campaigners, judges approved the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during designated hours throughout the Diwali.

During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the regulated periods across the capital, with minimal regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several monitoring devices throughout the city registered air quality spiking around midnight to the most severe measurements observed during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Regional Effects

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during Diwali also sparked a dispute with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partially attributing deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on hazardous particles originating in across the border following the events.

Chronic Environmental Crisis

Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in the capital have persisted as a significant issue for fifteen-plus years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

During Diwali, the amount of toxic particulate matter in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to 70% higher the most severe records ever documented in the Chinese city, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Various Contamination Factors

This crisis in Delhi is attributed to a combination of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from farm burning in adjacent states of neighboring agricultural zones.

In these regions, rural residents routinely burn crop residue to prepare for next season, generating hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the city as colder air sets in.

Public Health and Economic Impact

Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million inhabitants living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to numerous studies.

These hazardous conditions leads to high levels of neurological, cardiovascular and lung disorders, and can even lead to malignancies.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing 10,000 premature mortalities annually in Delhi.
