Prime TV Picks: Seven Must-Watch Films This Coming Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's bold commentary addresses the oppressive nature of female beauty and the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore delivers an inspired portrayal playing Elisabeth, an aging film star reduced to presenting a fitness program on the small screen. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, she undergoes an enigmatic and gruesome treatment called the Substance. This generates a new version of herself portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a progressively vampiric relationship between them. This Friday, Paramount Plus

This Mystery Thriller

This classic whodunit thriller features Knightley in the role of Laura, a top-notch writer who opts for a break from writing about world issues to join an opulent ship alongside an ailing Norwegian shipping heiress and charitable figure, her spouse, plus additional extremely wealthy guests. However when an enigmatic female goes overboard overnight and all passengers insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts kick in. Streaming currently, the Netflix platform

Presence Film

Soderbergh tests his creative boundaries with this clever paranormal narrative captured wholly from the perspective of the phantom. When a household including mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their fresh home, the lens – representing the ghost – tracks their movements. The teen shows signs of sensing the ghostly being, and it looks like defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist that may be unexpected. This Saturday, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage fully commits to his eccentric image in this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who accepts a $1m payday to attend a celebration in Mallorca for the rich Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the potential kingpin, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. This Saturday, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

Derrickson's locked-room horror remains effective even without a sequel. Located in 1978 Denver, several kidnappings has rendered the children frightened. When Finney is taken by the villain and held captive in a cellar, he anticipates a terrible outcome. However, the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, and the prescient dreams of his sister Gwen might rescue him. A solid creepfest. This Saturday, nighttime, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between faith and wealth, the winner is obvious for materialism in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation regarding the shamed TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the greedy Jim, who proclaims initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals set about monetising the people's religious faith. It's a riot of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and bad faith, however Chastain manages to show Tammy Faye in a likable light. Next Tuesday, late night, Film4

The Spy Mystery

This week's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh delivers a spy mystery as tight similar to the collars sported by Fassbender's intelligence officer. His assignment is with uncovering a mole inside the organization from five suspects – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, so a delicious psychological game of deception or honesty unfolds. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela take part the clever spy entertainment. This Friday, multiple time slots, Sky Cinema Premiere
